Playa Del Carmen Travel Guide

Updated: Jun 30, 2019

This past April my boyfriend and I had the privilege to go on an amazing spring break trip to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. This was easily one of the best weeks of my life and I couldn't help but share my experiences within the Vidanta Riviera Maya resort.

At Vidanta Riviera Maya there are five different lodging options.

  • The Grand Luxxe (where we stayed)

  • The Grand Bliss

  • The Grand Mayan

  • The Bliss

  • Mayan Palace

Our favorites:

  • Balché - Vibrant poolside cafe that offers a wide variety of tasty Mexican dishes

  • Jade Market - The perfect stop for groceries if you have a kitchen in your room. Eating out every meal gets expensive so every morning we made an effort to whip up our own breakfast.

  • In-room dining - After a long day in the sun it’s normal to feel a little bit lazy and want to stay in. Luckily, this resort has some of the best room service I have ever ordered and they are available 24 hours.

  • Pool bars - Swim up bars located in several pools scattered throughout the resort. They each offer full drink menus and everyday from 12-2 during happy hour the drinks are 2 for the price of 1. You can also order food from the same menu at “Balché” (mentioned above) and have it delivered to your seats poolside.

  • Aloreña Tables & Tapas - Perfect small plates to share if you’re interested in trying a bunch of small tasty things and getting a few drinks!

  • Robayaki Grill & Sushi: By far the best meal we had in the resort. Robayaki takes classic sushi rolls and puts their own spin on them by adding toppings and sauces! So tasty!

  • Pools: An abundance of different sized and shaped pools cover the resort. These range from the main pool featuring pool bars and volleyball nets to more relaxed areas like the infinity pool, etc. The list goes on, never the less, the pools at this resort will not disappoint!

  • Beaches: Beautiful white sand beaches line the coastline and connect the entire resort. Perfect spot if you want some more privacy and relaxation time away from other guests.

  • Salum: Hands down our favorite part of the resort. Our only regret of the trip was not discovering it sooner. Salum is home to some of the most beautiful pools and architecture I have ever seen. It is the perfect spot for chilling by the pool in the daytime. It is also filled with a number of tasty restaurants and bars come night time.

  • Resort nature walks - The resort provides mobil transportation to get guests to and from all their destinations but if you are ever in need of some extra exercise there are walkways and running paths built all throughout the inside of the resort. Who wouldn't want to go for a run with views like these?

  • Fitness center - Well equipped facility with tons of cardio equipment, free weights, machines, and a full sized ab/stretching room. We started everyday here and then went immediately to the pool right outside!

Where to Shop

  • Jade Boutique - Perfect place to buy any souvenirs for family, friends, and of course yourself. They have a great selection of high quality jewelry as well as the usual gift shop goodies. During our stay I ended up losing an earring in the pool and made a quick trip here to buy a replacement pair.

Things to Know

  • If you stay within your resort you will be safe and feel safe.

  • Be sure to ask if the drinking water is safe.

  • The sun is STRONG! Can't stress this enough. Be sure to reapply sunscreen frequently.

  • Pool bars get expensive. I recommend stocking up on alcohol at the airport upon arrival or at a local liquor store before entering the resort.

  • In this resort you won’t need cash on hand because they put everything on your room tab. This is extremely convenient but be sure to be careful and keep track on your own because the meals and drinks do tend to add u
